A Florida principal who was compelled to resign after mother and father complained that the photographs she confirmed to sixth graders of Michelangelo’s David had been “pornographic,” obtained to see the sculpture for herself in Italy this week.
Hope Carrasquilla resigned from her place as principal at Tallahassee Classical College in March. She mentioned the Leon County College Board gave her an ultimatum to resign or be fired, in response to The Washington Submit.
College board chair Barney Bishop informed the outlet that three mother and father had filed complaints relating to the lesson.
“She wasn’t let go due to the creative nude photos. We present it yearly to our college students,” Bishop informed The Submit. “The issue with this explicit difficulty was the dearth of follow-through on the method.”
Within the aftermath of the viral story, the mayor of Florence — the place David is now on show — invited the ousted instructor and her college students to go to. Now free from the constraints of a center college schedule, Carrasquilla took them up on the invite. She noticed the enduring David statue in individual on Friday.
Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Accademia Gallery, mentioned that Carrasquilla and her household had been an “immense pleasure” to host.
“I’m pleased to have the ability to welcome her and introduce her to the beauties of our museum, apart from exhibiting her the David, a sculpture that, I repeat as I’ve mentioned, has nothing to do with pornography,″ Hollberg mentioned in a press release. “It is a masterpiece, it represents a spiritual image of purity and innocence, the victory of excellent over evil.”
The gallery didn’t instantly return Insider’s request for touch upon Saturday.
Hollberg added that greater than 50% of the gallery’s guests come from the US and that David’s nudity “is a transparent expression of the Renaissance, which places man on the focal point.”
“I’m certain that Mrs. Carrasquilla will discover right here, in Florence, the welcome and the solidarity that she deserves,″ Hollberg mentioned.
